This thanksgiving I'm grateful. I'm grateful more than ever.
I was running an errand to Target to buy yet one more thing for our special dinner on Thursday and realized this would be my first holiday this year and in many many many years that I did not have to work all evening or have to work the very next morning at 2:30 am.
See having to work on a holiday morning may not be that bad because at least you are up early and take advantage of the whole day.
But being at dinner knowing that you have to rush out because you need to be at a studio the very next morning at an ungodly hour...That really stinks.
Or doing a newscast at 5 pm or 6 pm knowing your friends and family are waiting for you to rush in and eat before heading right back to work is not ideal.
And that's If you are lucky enough to have friends and family waiting for you because sometimes TV life takes you far from the ones you love and holidays are better off spent at work than alone.
And today for the very first time I reflect on this. I'm grateful for the dinner I will have and the games we will play and the many many many times I will not be checking the time.
I'm grateful that Gabriella is 6 and Sienna is 4 and not 26 and 24 which would have been their age if I would have retired at 65.
Letting that sink in.
As I celebrate this accomplishment, this small victory for my family. I can't help but wonder about my beloved colleagues...Who's doing their thanksgiving dinner? Who's buying the food. Who's organizing the yearly potluck? All the things that I learned to do as a lonely single and continued as a tradition even as my family grew. I hope they are carrying it on. I hope no one is spending thanksgiving alone.
